A quick interview with Execute the Sinner

First thing's first: I must apologize for my complete lack of posts lately. I have a new job and I'm trying to coordinate a move to a new house, and combined they have been totally occupying my time.
But I have something very special for you today. I've been having a little back-and-forth with Aimé Duquet, guitarist for Québec's own Execute The Sinner, about their new CD, which came out late last month, as well as their upcoming performance at D-TOX ROCKFEST in June. I discovered these guys a while ago and posted their song 'A Darker Feeling' almost immediately after I heard it. These guys are heavy as fuck, so check them out.

DRH: How old are you guys, and what are your names?
ETS: We are in our 20's and the band is JM, Phil, Aim, Nick.

DRH: How long have Execute the Sinner been together?
ETS: The band's been rollin' since 2006 but the current line up has been around since 2010.

DRH: How did you all meet and how did the band form?
ETS: We've been friends for a long time and we had bands together before, but with this band we wanted to reach a new sound.

DRH: What do you guys do outside of the band? Do you have jobs or go to school?
ETS: Well, Aim and Nick are still in school and Phil and JM have a full-time job.

DRH: How often do you play shows?
ETS: We play shows more or less twice a week and the band did a tour [The No Care Ever Canadian Tour] with Arsonists Gets All The Girls in 2009.

DRH: How did your CD release show on April 27th go?
ETS: It was awesome! There was a lot of our friends and we had a great time.

DRH: How long had the band been working on Threnody?
ETS: Since the summer of 2010.

DRH: How was recording the album? Where did you record?
ETS: We recorded at 357 Productions with Ion Dissonance's Antoine Lussier. He recorded and produced our album. The recording was one of the best times we've had in studio. Tony is a great dude and the recording was done in 2 weeks so it was short and sweet.

DRH: What is the songwriting process like for you? Who writes what?
ETS: Aim writes all the music. Aim usually come up with a riff or an idea an then we rehearse the track till it is done. JM usually come up with the lyrics for the songs.

DRH: Are there any songs on Threnody that you're especially happy with the way they turned out?
ETS: The track ''Threnody'' was one of our biggest accomplishments 'cause of the sound that we wanted for that particular type of riff and “Into The Void Of Your Mind” was also great because it incorporates more leads and a guitar solo which is really different from the other tracks . But overall we are really proud of every track that is on this record. We scrapped a lot of songs that we're not good enough to be on the record. We didn't wanted any fillers.

DRH: How did you you hook up with Alex Erian from Despised Icon and Kevin McCaughey from Ion Dissonance?
ETS: We've known Kevin since we already played with Ion Dissonance and Phil knew Alex a bit so we just asked them and they agreed.

DRH: What kind of influences do you all have musically? What bands do you listen to?
ETS: We listen to a lot of bands like Meshuggah, See You Next Tuesday, Sikth, Ion Dissonance, Despised Icon, Born Of Osiris and The Faceless. But we all listen to different styles like a lot of jazz music like Allan Holdsworth, Kurt Rosenwinkel or rap music like Manu Militari, who is a Quebec rapper.

DRH: What are some of the bands that you have played with in the past that you've been excited to play for?
ETS: We played two shows last summer with Ion Dissonance and we are big fan of them so we were stoked!

DRH: How do you feel about getting to play at Rockfest in Montebello this year?
ETS: We're stoked! It's a huge event and there is a lot of band that we've never seen live so it's pretty cool for that.

DRH: Will this be the biggest event ETS will have played at?
ETS: Yeah for sure. We play also at the Farnham skatefest this summer with Protest The Hero and Beneath The Massacre so check it out!
